Blog Assignment5

The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him.

Three adjectives that describe Santiago are lonely, poor, and old. Firstly, Santiago has a conversation only with Manolin in this text. This shows Santiago has no family (his wife had already died). In this text, Santiago is described as "fished alone" (page9, line1) and I feel loneliness from his atmosphere and how to speak so I think lonely describes Santiago. Secondly, Santiago hadn't taken a fish for eighty-four days (page9, line2). And Santiago and Manolin go through a fiction everyday. I think this is because they tries to conceal their poverty or loneliness so I think poor describes Santiago. Thirdly, in this text, Santiago's look is described in detail, for example, "The old man was thin ...... from handling heavy fish on the cords." (page9, line15 ~ page10, line4) There are other descriptions about his look. I think old describes Santiago because of them.

Two adjectives that describe Manolin are kind and innocent. Firstly, Manolin is always anxious about Santiago, for example, Manolin says to Santiago, "May I get the sardines?" (page13, line10) or "I would like to serve in some way." (page12, line10) There are many scenes that Manolin is anxous about Santiago so I think kind describes Santiago. Secondly, Manolin asks Santiago to fish together (page10 and 12). Manolin asks and repeats so I think innocent descrobes Manolin.

Blogging assignment for 4/26

The thesis statement I've chosen for Essay 1 is the following: Deciding goals and plans raises students' motivation. If we decide goals, we will know what to do and be able to make plans for goals. I think keeping the high motivation is very important to spend the college life successfully.

How do "good" college teachers present information?"

According to Meiland, a "good" college teacher presents information in the following way. In general, good college teachers present some information , in the sense of "what is currently believed." And they spend much time about the basis on which this information is currently believed. Moreover, they demand their students of understanding beliefs at different level from high school and higher level than high school. So students have to engage in a different kind of intellectual activity in college.

I agree with Meiland's opinion. Teachers in high scool teach their students basic skills of each subjects. College students have to learn many and high-level things aggressively in their colleges. But they don't know what to do at the start. So some information from college teachers are necessary.
